Culture of Toyohashi

Toyohashi Haristos Orthodox Church

photo_Toyohashi Haristos Orthodox ChurchBuilt in 1913, the oldest Russian orthodox church in existence in Aichi. This is an example of a white chalk byzantine church, with art, craftwork and icons much in evidence.




Iwaya Kannon

Statue of Iwaya KannonA religious Kannon statue is originally from the Edo Era (1603 - 1868), rebuilt in 1950. It is believed that the Iwaya Kannon Hall exists because Gyoki (a Japanese priest) enshrined a thousand-handed Kannon on this site in the Nara Era (710 - 794), and many cultural treasures remain here.




Akumi Doll Joruri Ballad Drama

Akumi Doll JoruriDesignated an intangible cultural asset by Toyohashi City in 1990, this is a puppet drama operated by 3 men, unusual throughout Japan. A regular performance is held by the preservation society on the third Sunday of November each year.
